While the 2001 law made the practice legal, men and women who wish to resort to it face refusal from doctors and family pressure. Often reversible, this contraceptive method remains uncommon in French customs, unlike in Anglo-Saxon countries.
Luka Velemir, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Nice, notes a majority of requests coming from women aged 35 to 40:
“Before that age, I am very cautious about doing it. The certainties one has at 20 are not the same as at 30 or 40. Each person’s choice must be respected, but the doctor is not obliged to say yes to everything; they can refer to colleagues.”
So, to avoid numerous disappointments, a form of solidarity is organizing among patients, especially on social media. Like this Facebook group that has compiled a directory of willing practitioners.
